A PICTURE BOOK BY BILL PEET

Jethro and Joel Were a Troll

Jethro and Joel are the two squabbling heads of a single two-headed troll, and when grumpy Joel insists on rampaging through the countryside, the good-natured Jethro must rein him in.

OPENING LINES

"Their life was simple as could be, with nothing to do but clear the weeds out of their turnip patch every day, and they could have lived there happily forever if Joel hadn't been so grumpy and miserable. 'This is no fun,' Joel grumbled. 'A horrible monster like us should be out rampaging around the countryside, stirring up trouble.'"

WHY HE WROTE IT: IN THE FAMILY'S WORDS

On the original family site, early sketches show that Bill Peet tried out a variety of two-headed creatures before settling on Jethro and Joel. The story is a comic study in cooperation and conscience, two natures sharing one body who must learn to get along.
