Bill Peet: An Autobiography
Bill Peet's own life story, told with an illustration on every page, from his Indiana boyhood through his 27 years at Walt Disney Studios to his second career as a beloved author and illustrator. It won a Caldecott Honor in 1990.
"I drew for hours at a time just for the fun of it, and yet I was hoping to find some practical reason to draw for the rest of my life. But when I entered grade school, my drawing habit suddenly became a problem."
On the original family site, his son explained how the book came together. Fans often suggested Bill write about himself, and he had drafts on family pets and on his Disney years (tentatively titled "Walt and WE") that his publisher encouraged him to combine and expand. "His approach to his autobiography was the same as his approach to his other stories. There is an illustration on every page accompanied by text that describes his feelings and thoughts." He chose to leave out some of the unhappier parts of his life that he felt would not be appropriate for his younger readers. (Bill Peet, Jr.)
