A PICTURE BOOK BY BILL PEET

Goliath II

The story of the smallest elephant in the jungle, who longs to live up to his father's mighty name and finally finds his moment of courage when a tiny menace threatens the herd.

OPENING LINES

Goliath II was the tiniest elephant in the jungle, no bigger than a mouse, and though his father was the mightiest of all the elephants, little Goliath had a giant-sized wish to prove that he could be brave.

WHY HE WROTE IT: IN THE FAMILY'S WORDS

In 1959, the same year Bill Peet's first book, Hubert's Hair-Raising Adventure, was published, Goliath II was published by Golden Press. Bill wrote and illustrated this original story, which he intended to be one of his own books. It is now out of print, but can be found through online booksellers. The film short Goliath II was released theatrically in 1960 and was nominated for an Academy Award.
