Capyboppy
A true story: the Peet family adopts a capybara, the world's largest rodent, and the gentle, mischievous Capy becomes far more of a handful than anyone expected, in this rare nonfiction book about a real family pet.
Capy was a capybara, the largest rodent in the world, a native of the American tropics who came to live with the Peet family and very nearly took the household over.
On the original family site, his son explained the real story behind the book. "Capy was a capybara... My mother started calling him Capyboppy and the name stuck. I am ashamed to admit I ordered Capy from an animal importer. Exotic pets often become more than their owners can handle, as did Capy." He noted that only a small fraction of imported animals survive the journey from their natural habitat, and that the family's experience left them wary of the exotic pet trade. (Bill Peet, Jr.)
